A 7-year-old girl was killed in a stabbing on the city's South Side on Saturday morning.

Chicago police said the girl was walking on the southbound side of the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood just before noon, when she was approached by a woman.

The woman pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the girl multiple times in the back.

She was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Loved ones have identified her as Eddimar Hernandez Chacon.

Police said bystanders who witnessed the stabbing detained the woman. They said she was injured and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in police custody.

Detectives closed off the area for hours as they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Police have not said what the motivation was believed to be for the attack, or if the alleged attacker and the victim knew each other.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.

Editors' note: The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Edi Marie Hernandez Chacon. Loved ones at a vigil on Sunday afternoon provided the correct spelling of her name.
