Car caught up in floodwaters stemming from North Side water main break

It’s the kind of story you would usually hear after severe weather in San Antonio, a car being caught up and swept away in floodwaters.

One man experienced that Tuesday morning, and the driving mishap was related to water that covered the street coming from an underground pipe.

A spokeswoman for the San Antonio Water System confirmed that a water main broke along Blanco Road near Wurzbach Parkway, giving way to the massive water leak.

Video shared through KSAT Connect showed water that appeared to be at least a foot deep, spilling into the intersection.

During the water leak and later cleanup, drivers had to navigate past lane closures and Wurzbach Parkway’s shutdown off ramps in that area.

“We thought it rained at first and then we were, like, ‘Wait a minute. No.’ And then you saw the big crack in the middle of the road and we were, like, ‘That’s a main break,” said Ashleigh Lewis, who lives in an apartment complex nearby.

Lewis quickly grabbed her phone and captured video of what looked like a river rushing through the street in front of her complex.

Lewis said she and her family had to adjust at the apartments in order to make it through.

“We’re just going to go get more water bottles until we get any word on what’s going to happen,” Lewis said. “We’re just going to have to do it the old school way.”

According to the SAWS spokeswoman, the break was likely related to hot and dry weather.

There was no estimate early on for when the repair work would be completed or when the water would be turned on again.
