The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host its annual synchronous firefly viewing event in the first week of June to showcase a naturally occurring phenomenon involving the Photinus carolinus firefly species. During mating season, these male fireflies flash in near perfect harmony in a biological feat that has astounded scientists. Tickets to the nightly light show occurring between June 3 and June 10 can only be accessed by entering a lottery. A total of 800 vehicle passes, 100 passes per night, will be issued in order to reduce traffic congestion and minimize disturbance to these unique fireflies during their peak mating period.
